Who Is Coming for Dinner?

Spring and summer brought carpets of wildflowers and grasses to the Fiscalini Preserve’s coastal bluff. The wildflowers, grasses, and their seeds set the table for insects and worms. As the supply of small food exploded, so did the rest of the food chain from reptiles, ground squirrels, voles, moles, weasels, rabbits, and birds (from Gnat Catchers to Great Blue Herons). Larger creatures have come down to join the feast, including deer, skunks, and coyote.
Similarly, the longer days and upwelling from shifting currents have set the table in the tide pools, from algae, snails, barnacles, crabs, sea stars, octopuses, and fish. The kelp forest is reaching its full height and has become a major food source, protective nursery, and habitat for near shore sea life.
This walk is free and open to the public. Children are welcome with adult supervision. No dogs please. Please be aware that there are no restroom facilities on the Ranch and plan accordingly. Rain cancels.
