What Our Colder, Shorter Days have Meant to Our Preserve
Location: Registrants will be informed of location
Docent: Gil Eastman
The powerful ocean waves and short, cold days of fall and winter have once again started preparing the Fiscalini Preserve for the rebirth and wonder of the new year. As last year’s plants and grasses decompose, their nutrients and seeds are going back into the soil. The insects, critters, and mycelia are helping to till the soil and spread the nutrients. The churning forces of the waves and currents are cleaning the tide pools and near shore tidal areas. Marine life forms are spawning. Birds are migrating (many to their winter homes on the Central Coast). Mammals, including whales, dolphins, otters are often easier to spot.
This two-mile, two-hour docent led stroll gives us the opportunity to think about how “Mother Nature” provides for a diverse range of life on the Fiscalini Preserve. Bring water and binoculars, if you have them. No dogs, rain cancels. Children are welcome with adult supervision. Remember there are no restroom facilities on the Ranch, so plan accordingly!
