2023.05.03 | Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council to Meet in Cambria
The quarterly meeting of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) Advisory Council will be held in Cambria on May 19, 2023. The meeting is open to interested members of the public and will be held in the Cambria Coast Unified School District Boardroom at 1350 Main St. from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.
As many of you know, the Sanctuary is a federally protected marine area offshore of California’s central coast stretching from Marin County to Cambria where the southern boundary is marked by a sign along the ocean trail near the northern edge of the Fiscalini Ranch.
The MBNMS is managed by a staff located in Monterey and supported by a volunteer citizen’s Advisory Council which has played a vital role in the decisions affecting the Sanctuary along the central California Coast. The Advisory Council's twenty voting members represent the following user groups: Agriculture, At-Large, Business/Industry, Commercial Fishing, Conservation, Diving, Education, Recreation, Recreational Fishing, Research and Tourism, plus seven local and state governmental jurisdictions.
The upcoming meeting on May 19 is an opportunity to hear from MBNMS staff leaders and Advisory Council members discussing the status of the sanctuary and operating issues requiring attention with possible regulations upgrades. There is a session during the meeting for public comment.
Steve Allen, Cambria resident, recently became the Advisory Council Member-at-Large for the Southern Region following the retirement of long-serving member P.J. (Margaret) Webb.
The draft meeting agenda of the Advisory Council can be found on the website of the MBNMS montereybay.noaa.gov under Get Involved.
